Audubon Silver Bluff Sanctuary- Aiken, SC

Aiken, SC is lucky enough to have so many special protected places like Hitchcock Woods, Carolina Bay but there another sanctuary you may not know about that’s 3,400-acre woodlands overlooking the Savannah River.

So where are we right now? It is Audubon Silver Bluff Sanctuary. Here you will find extensive pine forests and bottomland hardwood forests; beautiful walking trails; 50 acres of lakes and ponds; 100 acres of grassland; and all manner of birds and wildlife.

Silver Bluff is a haven for wildlife and wildlife watchers. More than 200 bird species have been spotted here, including Bald Eagles, Wood Storks and other species.

There seems to be something year-round to do, watch and enjoy. In August/September there are hundreds of Wood Storks and other wading birds in the pond areas. Plus, Hundreds of Rough-winged swallows gather prior to migrating south. In the Winter you find sparrows, woodpeckers and ducks.

At the visitor center parking area, you'll find a kiosk with a map that shows the way to each trailhead. The trails are well-marked with traditional hiker symbols on orange posts, so you will not need a map to find your way. The Audubon is pet friendly but only with a leash!

It is free to walk around and they happily accept donations!

Homeowner + Buyer Tips for Septic Tank Systems- Aiken, SC

Septic Tank Systems… what to know before you buy + if you own a home.

First tip:

Know where your septic tank is located along with the drain field. If buying a home request your agent to ask the seller or check with DHEC to see if there is septic tank plat on record to give you a clue.

In our opinion its always worth it to have the septic tank and field inspected by an expert before you buy or regularly if you own.  The EPA suggests every 3-5 years unless you are experiencing a problem.

Don’t:  Pour down the sink or toilet.

·        Cooking grease or oil

·        Household chemicals

·        Coffee grounds

These are common mistakes.  Be kind to your septic system.

DO:

·        Dispose of coffee grounds or food into trash can.

·        Grease…  a handy hack is put the grease into use old plastic container to harden before discarding properly. I put my partial used container in freezer and when full, then I dispose properly.

·        EPA to eliminate or limit the use of a garbage disposal. It is easy just put those items into the trash instead.

Don’t overload the commode.

Flushing non degradable products, chemicals, hygiene products, dental floss, diapers, cigarette butts, cat litter, paper towels or pharmaceuticals are not good to put into your commode or septic tank system.

Dispose of these items in the trash can!

As EPA the says “Shield your Field”

·        Plant only grasses over and near your septic system. Roots from nearby trees or shrubs might clog and damage the drain field.

·        Do not drive or park vehicles on any part of your septic system.

Wonder why?

Doing so can compact the soil in your drain field or damage the pipes, tank, or other septic system components.

Last tip:

Use water efficiently, do not strain your septic system. Fix those running toilets and drippy faucets! Becoming more water efficient is being “septic smart”.

Brandi + Vikki both have septic systems and have had very few problems over 30 years but we follow the above guidelines. For more great information on Septic System’s go to this EPA website: https://www.epa.gov/septic/more-resources-homeowners-septic-systems

It’s a big decision, we know. We’re here to help!
