Pediatric Wellness in Aiken, SC: Bethany + Tail-Wagging Chiver- Saylor PT!

Did you know we have a new physical therapist in town who has the most handsome + adorable partner and they specialize in Pediatrics?!

This week we are here at Saylor Physical Therapy with Bethany Borkoski a Pediatric Physical Therapist and with her handsome partner…. Chiver. Together they are an Animal Assisted Interventions Team. Bethany and Chiver’s expertise is something new to the Aiken area.

1. We are a pediatric physical therapy clinic.

We see kids of all ages to provide skilled intervention for a variety of problems and diagnoses. We make therapy feel like play, to ensure that our patients receive the maximum benefits.

2. Chiver is our clinic facility dog– this is different from a therapy dog.

Therapy dogs are great at providing emotional support with their volunteer handler, in an array of settings, following entry level training. In contrast, a facility dog is a canine that is partnered with a professional to work in a specific setting to help a variety of patients or people reach their goals. Facility dogs know a wide range of skills or cues to help their patients. Chiver had almost 2 years of extensive training and temperament testing before he was partnered with me to work with my patients. We are a team that works to implement therapy in a way that is fun and motivating to our kids.

3. Chiver is so helpful with my patients because he’s not only a companion in sessions, but an attention getter– and keeper!

When we are learning new skills, we must be attentive and focused on the task to make a mental map- or gross motor plan– that we can use to improve our efficiency and success with a new activity. If we aren’t paying attention because we are stressed, distracted, upset, looking for sensory input. etc. We can’t learn. Chiver helps my patients be at ease, as well as keep them attentive to what they should be doing.

4. My goal is to treat every patient with a holistic approach.

After 10 years working in Columbia at the Children’s Hospital Outpatient Clinic, I know that there is so much more to my patient’s success with therapy than what we do for the hour I see them. I am intentional to collaborate with other therapists on the patient’s care team, their doctors and specialists, the school, equipment providers/orthotists/prosthetists, to make sure that everyone is on the same page with the patient and family’s goals. As a team, we can do much more than each of us alone.

Make sure to follow Saylor PT and Chiver the Facility Dog on their social media pages for more!
