5 Tips for Seniors on the Move- Aiken, SC + Augusta, GA

Selling your home when you are a senior is very different than when you are selling when you are younger.

HI… I’m Vikki Crossland of Meybohm Real Estate and I fit perfectly in this discussion. Stay with us to learn 5 tips on how we help empower you to make the best decisions… btw I’m Brandi Cook.

Welcome to “5 tips to downsizing or relocation when you are a senior”.  Depending on your age and outlook this can either make you anxious or excited, possibly both.  It is normal to have mixed feelings.

In the beginning its best to determine how much involvement family or maybe a good trusting friend will be involved.

It’s always a positive to have the right support and letting your REALTOR®, know is key to successful journey.

#1 Tip- Determine Your Housing Needs

Make a list of what is important to you. Here are some things to consider.

Looking for new home to “age in place”?

Independent living like a condo, townhome or just a smaller single-family home that is more maintenance free are great options.

Adapting to these homes may be necessary. Popular features are open plans with less obstructions, no or zero steps entry, wider doorways, lever style door handles, no-step showers or tubs are just a few items to consider.

Lots of seniors are moving into guest cottages or into in-law suites on family or friends’ property.

I am looking into one of granny pods… they look pretty cool to me.

Living in a senior community or facility that may offer independent living OR do you need assisted or continuous care?

A REALTOR® who understands a Seniors needs who is specifically trained in helping seniors is an SRES® [Senior Real Estate Specialist]. They can help you navigate these senior housing options.

#2 Direction + LOCATION.

You need to know this before listing your home for sale.  It’s far more stressful selling your home first, without a plan in place.  YOUR REALTOR®, friends and family can provide support and guidance here. When we say direction we mean, are you moving out of the area or into another state? That needs to be determined early in the process, or at minimum know your options.

If you are staying local, the CSRA (Aiken, SC -Augusta, Georgia) there are several great options for all seniors. We can help you with the array of options available here, just call us.

We want our seller clients to be comfortable with this process and new journey.

#3 Timing

Timing is a very important part of the process. The big question is should I move before or after I sell my home.

IF, you are financially able to move into your new home or community first…it tends to be more seamless and less stressful.

Need to sell your home first or its your preference, the timing needs to be more carefully planned.

That’s not a problem, we have handled this for many clients but it’s REAL important to discuss this with your REALTOR®, upfront.

No one wants you to be homeless without plan in place; this is not easy at any age.

We are happy to report after 37+ years selling homes; not one of our clients have been homeless, unless that was their plan.

#4 Budget

Consider all your financial resources you have to make a move.

How much money do you have for initial investment and plus your projected monthly income to cover ongoing expenses.

This is extremely important and you may want to involve your CPA, financial planner or trusted family member in this phase.

#5 Meet with a SRES® REALTOR

Simplifying the Selling Process. Selling your home at this stage in life can be complex and highly emotional. Choose your REALTOR® wisely, one that will take the time, have patience and knowledge of how to simplify things and support you every step of the way. Our team has robust resources and support to help you prepare for your next move.
