As locals, we sometimes overlook
the natural wonders right in our backyard. Just 15-20 minutes from Downtown
Aiken lies nearly 1,100 acres of pristine beauty – Aiken State Park, another
one of Aiken's hidden treasures.
Established in 1934 along the
tranquil South Edisto River, Aiken State Park is a haven for outdoor
enthusiasts. With fishing, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities, it's a perfect
getaway for nature lovers. A scenic 1.7-mile canoe and kayak trail winds its
way down the south fork of the Edisto River, attracting paddlers from across
the region. Aiken State Park holds historical significance as one of the 16
original parks in South Carolina, built by an African American detachment of
the Civilian Conservation Corps. Many of the original buildings still stand,
preserving the park's heritage. The park offers both tent and RV campsites,
with 25 RV/campsites available, equipped with electric, water, and some with
sewer hookups. There's also a dump site for added convenience.
I personally stayed here. We were practicing
RV skills during Covid and explored the walking trails. Plus, there's something
for everyone, whether it's kayaking, canoeing, or simply enjoying nature.
Here are the Top 5 Things to Do at
Aiken State Park:
1. Rent a canoe and take a float
down a 1.7 mile stretch of the Edisto River.
2. Explore the Jungle Trail or try
the orienteering course for an adventurous hike.
3. Cast your line and fish in one
of Aiken State Park’s four lakes, abundant with bream, bass, and catfish.
4. Quench your thirst from one of
the three artesian fountains found in the park.
5. Beat the heat and take a
refreshing dip in the park’s swimming area.
